The original home on the property was called “Ellerslie.” Ellerslie was built between 1820 and 1840 as a summer home and country retreat by John Wickham (1763-1839), the Richmond lawyer who defended Aaron Burr in his trial for treason. The surrounding farm was known as Middle Quarter Plantation and was purchased by Wickham from the adjoining Tuckahoe in 1800.

The home was later purchased by Allen Denton in 1847, and Wickham’s descendants moved to the nearby “Woodside” in 1854. In 1874, Thomas M. Dietrich purchased the property, and it was known as “The Dietrich House” until 1925, when it was sold to CCV. The James River Course opened on June 30, 1928, and the house served as the clubhouse until 1974.
In honor of this history, the new private dining room will be called the Dietrich Room and the Ladies’ Card Room will now be known as the Ellerslie Room. Together with Tally, these Club spaces carry forward the stories that shaped this campus—honoring our tradition while welcoming the future of the Clubhouse and James River Campus.
